Another amazing Poetry Slam by Mr.Brightman’s Writing class students. These artists wrote and performed moving, emotional and thought-provoking poetry pieces that had the audience in a standing ovation! These brave students bared their thoughts and souls on stage in front of peers and parents. We are so proud of our Weeks Poetry Warriors!
Weeks’ National Junior Honor Society inducted new members into this exceptional club! The ceremony was highlighted with a former Weeks student and current medical doctor as the keynote speaker. We are so proud of our honor students and what NJHS brings to our school. Go NJHS Wildcats!
DMPS will again offer breakfast and lunch over the summer months to children 18 and younger. The number of sites has grown, and so have the number of meals served. Last summer, DMPS staff fed children 28,722 breakfasts and 79,698 lunches. DMPS has sponsored a summer meal program for more than 30 years. Weeks’ garden is starting to bloom again this year thanks to the continuing sponsorship of our business Hy-Vee. Each year our Structured Learning classroom students grow flowers and vegetables to learn about healthy eating choices. This is the third year Hy-Vee has supported our awesome garden!
Top earners for this year’s fundraiser won a ride in a limousine! The lucky winners toured the SouthSide’s attractions while jamming to their favorite songs and enjoying refreshments. Check out pictures from event on our Flickr page.
In spite of the debate about when the school year should start, at DMPS we wonder: when does it end? That’s because activities take place at our schools nearly every day of the year. Weeks music students gathered at the State Fairgrounds to perform in the All City Music Festival. Band, Orchestra and Chorus students performed music with every Des Moines middle school. The finale song was composed and directed by our own Mr. Goodwin!
Weeks is teaming up with our generous business partner, Hy-Vee, for a three-weekend Cookie Sale! Each Saturday in April 4- April 18th, our teachers and staff will be selling cookies at the SE 14th Hy-Vee store as a school fundraiser. A portion of all cookie sales are donated to Weeks Middle School. Come out to Hy-Vee on the next three Saturdays to support our school!
6th Grade students in Ms. Heller’s and Mrs. Hubbell’s science classes are enjoying learning about microscopes. They are beginning a unit on “The Human Body” and are exploring through exciting hands-on investigations.
