Junior Police Explorers Program

The Des Moines Junior Police Explorers program is designed to target urban youth in elementary and middle school grades 4th through 8th.  The program is an extension of community policing.  It changes the role of a police officer from an enforcer to a  mentor, friend and someone they can trust, building a safer community and school while enriching the development of future leaders.

Students in the program meet after school and learn hands on about what it takes to be a police officer.  Students will learn about law enforcement, government, patrol officer functions, traffic enforcement and accident investigation, narcotic and liquor effects and consequences, radio communications, officers tactics, gang awareness, conflict resolution, report writing, physical fitness training, teen crime, internet safety and more.
